Long before COVID-19, long before automobiles rumbled along our highways, and even long before standard indoor plumbing, our young state found itself on the brink of armed aggression with a fledging territory on our northern border. At stake was the growing port city of Toledo on Lake Erie’s western shore, and the mouth of the great Maumee River, a valuable asset in commerce and natural resources. Michigan claimed this territory as her own. As did we.
